The IT List: What I Want Now for Fall

I love fall. Its my absolute favorite season. The heat of summer begins to fade away, but the days remain mild well into October. The leaves turn, scattering to the wind. A new school year begins for all of the little ones- and some of us grown ups as well, myself included. But perhaps most of all, I love fall fashion. I love the layers, sweaters, tights, boots... All of it. This fall is no exception, and is particularly exciting with the addition of the bold color trend which took the runways of New York and Paris by storm for the 2011 Spring and Resort Collections, continuing right on in to the Fall Collections a` la the Fall 2011 Barneys Co-Op Lookbook, as below.

I freely admit, my day to day wardrobe consists mostly of neutral black, gray, and white pieces that mix and match pretty effortlessly, and take my easily from day to night. However, I've definitely warmed to the idea of integrating some bold color here and there. While, most of my color hits will likely come from accessories (hot pink platform pumps, yes please! And Ill share my accessories picks with you next week.) I am currently lusting after these 10 styles to add to my fall fashion wardrobe. All of the pieces I've selected are classics shapes, and will easily be carried from season to season, which is a must for me. I don't ever want to buy something that will be "out" by next season. It makes it easier to rationalize purchasing good quality, investment pieces to add to your wardrobe when you know you will get a lot of wear out of an item. All of these pieces are also very easy to mix and match, with each other and with other items in your wardrobe. What are your must haves for this fall?

1. Dark Denim Straight Leg Jeans: A little more relaxed than a skinny jean, but these still offer a nice silhouette and also look great cuffed to show off your amazing shoes. The dark wash goes with everything, and has a slimming effect. This pair from J Brand has just the right amount of stretch to stay comfortable, but still retain shape. For the same look on the cheap, try this pair from American Eagle.

2. The Striped Top: Stripes have made a serious comeback, and they aren't going away any time soon. Embrace the wearability of this pattern in a versatile tunic shape, like this Topshop version. It can be worn alone with tights and boots as a dress, over your favorite jeans as a tunic, or tucked into a tailored skirt as a blouse. Now that's getting your moneys worth, and at only $45 this top is a steal.

3. Deep Colored Skinny Cords: Any deep color such as espresso, navy, plum, or a burgundy like this J Brand pair will be an effortless way to update your wardrobe for fall. Just trade them for your favorite jeans, top your favorite tee with a blazer or sweater, and throw on some leopard print pumps and voila: you are fall ready. For the same look on the cheap, try this pair from J crew or these from Victoria's Secret.

4. The Tie Neck Blouse: Ladylike and wearable, this can item can easily be dressed up for work or down for casual days. Pick a ditsy print, like this tiny star print, or neutral floral or bold color. Any way you choose, you can't really go wrong with this easy update. For the same look on the cheap, try this solid color version from Vince Camuto, the studded cuffs add a hint of edge. This paisley print from Hinge is another great option.

5. The Neutral Oversized Silk Blouse: This one is a classic you'll wear for years. Invest in a well tailored version to ensure oversized doesn't translate to: I'm wearing a bag, aren't I cute? To keep it current, look for details like patch pockets, or a collarless neck. Wear it with anything, and style it up with accessories. If you can afford it, Equipment makes a great version. For a slightly less costly version, count on Jcrew to deliver high quality basics, like this one or this one.

6. The Chunky Sweater: A fall classic. Wear it over your silky dresses and tops for day to dress them down, and throw it on over leather leggings to edge it up. To keep it current, and from overwhelming a petite frame, cinch it with a belt. For the same look on the cheap, try this one from Express.

7. The Bright Bottom: Here's my ode to the bright trend. I love the bold royal blue color, and it is really quite a wearable shade, while definitely making a stylish statement. The cropped, slightly slouchy silhouette of this pant makes it easy to wear and style. Toss on a t-shirt and some neutral heels and you have an easy day look. For work, tuck in the tie neck or silk blouse and your good to go. For the same look on the cheap, try this cropped wool pair from J crew. Or if you prefer a more casual look, punch up your jean wardrobe with a pair of these BDG jeans from Urban Outfitters.

8. The Bold Dress: This is one of my favorites, and there are so many options to choose from this fall. I'm definitely picking up this Splendid version for fall (I have it in black and wear it all the time) but I'll probably also add a Turquoise option like this or perhaps this emerald green number to my lineup as well. Choose a dress in jersey or silk, and keep it mid thigh or tunic length. This allows for ultimate versatility and styling.

9. The Pencil Skirt: Thank you, Mad Men. I'm just not a fan of the loose maxi skirt, and love the ladylike classic silhouette of the pencil skirt. Again, there are so many options for fall: bold color, leather, patterns. To keep it current just be sure to choose one that hits at, or just below the knee. For the same look on the cheap, try this one from Victoria's Secret, or this more tailored wool version from J Crew.

10. The Statement Coat: The description for this DVF number says it all: a colorful coverup can transform your look. We've all got our basic black or camel coat in the closet, right? Well, step it up a bit for this fall and grab a new jacket in a bold color or pattern, such as tweed or plaid. Pick one that you love, with an impeccable fit, and you'll wear it forever. I don't think outerwear is a place to skimp as a good coat can last a lifetime, but if a splurge here is simply not in your budget,  try this wool trench from Victorias Secret or check out Tulle's selection of on trend coats here.

Happy Shopping!
